If you want your house cleaned while you are out... get one of these http://www.irobot.com/uk/store.aspx?camp=ppc:google:products_roomba:G_790612525_64224850_roomba:roomba

It's really good - certainly better than my Dyson for dog and cat hair - and I can get on with other stuff while it works! Of course it doesnt do stairs, but you can get a small hand-held or use a brush for those!

They tested the hoover-bots on The Gadget Show, and most of them were rubbish...

For the record, we've got a Dyson and I think it's great. They'll also do call-out repairs for a flat rate of about £70 - including all parts and labour.

i was about to ask a stupid question about what was the difference between henry and hetty, but found a website to explain that they're the same just with different paint! i see they also have a 'james' which is a smaller one. anyone ever used that?

So not far off the cost of a new Henry then..... :rotfl: bargain.

I had a £50 Samsung upright that lasted for 3 years surviving plenty of DIY abuse. It sucked up plenty of broken tiles, plaster dust and all sorts. I replaced it with a Hoover upright thinking that I couldn't go wrong with the Hoover brand. How wrong I was. It is terrible. The belt snapped after a week. It regularly gets blocked up and after 6 months bits keep falling off, I have had to stick it together with duck tape and it blows most of the dust it sucks up around the room again. It's the worst thing I have bought for years.

I have used SEBO vaccum cleaners for the past twenty years. Often have a free five year guarantee and if anything does go wrong an engineer comes to your home to repair it. I wouldn't use any other brand now.

Another vote for Henry from me! :D. I first used a Henry when I was a student and worked in hotels and know from that experience that they can tackle anything and are not far off indestructible as when I worked there I saw several of them that had bounced down staircases and still worked perfectly afterwards. They are also the preferred vacuum cleaner amongst several branches of our armed forces due to their durability :rotfl: They can be used bag less but I prefer using the bags in mine as I don't much like having to clean out bag less cleaners. :o. Ours is currently four years old and the biggest problem that I have ever had with it is that my 2 year old son loves it and constantly wants it out and switched on. :rotfl: also if you have carpets the red air flow brush is absolutely amazing and would strongly advise getting that too as it worth far more than it costs. :D

I have a Panasonic upright which is getting on for 20 years old. It still works perfectly.

My daughter had a Dyson which failed after around 4 years. She then went and bought another one. A triumph of optimism over experience!
