Pictures (eg JPGs) not showing in Thunderbird

Hello all, I use Thunderbird (3.1.10) as email programme, however sometimes it doesn't display JPGs. For example this morning I received an email telling me that there is a problem at a location so there is a jpg showing a map and a gif for a circle to show "problem here". However these are not displayed there is a border for the image and a smaller border for the gif within that, then at the bottom it shows that the email contains images (image004.jpg and image 003.gif).

Have a look at the pic below to see what I mean.

Does anyone know how to overcome this please?

When I use Thunderbird, I get the squares and the option of downloading the pictures in a yellow "warning" bar at the top. Don't you get that?

Normal behaviour of thunderbird is to block images. This is because images can be used to track you, or by spammers to confirm that an account is open (i.e. a unique image sent only to a single email address).

The other thing is that images have been sent with exploit code through email, see this article from 2004:

You'll just have to select whatever option lets you display images. IIRC its something like View > Display images inline

No don't get a yellow warning bar. I normally get that when I get emails from companies and you need to click on "View remote content"

    Display Attachments inline is ticked.

It's been years since I've used it as my main email program, only fire it up to look at email archives. I think I know what you mean, I remember it doing that at times, and I never really solved it TBH. I just saved the attachments and didn't worry too much.

The email initially received was 627Kb, if I forward it to another (personal) email address the 'blank squares' show in the email but the images aren't attached (not shown at the bottom of message) and the email is only 13Kb.

    Frustrating.
