hi

sorry if this has been asked before, but why.....

cant i tax my car without the reminder... Why cant i use Registration mark ? afterall, no one is going to tax my car for me??

I dont understand it - i want to tax my car, but i have not had a reminder yet, its a pita to look for my log book (i have a rough idea where it is) but i would happily go online now and tax my car, but i cant because i dont have the documents with me

and while i am on the subject - i think it is completely out of order to charge to use a credit card to pay a tax!
Willow: I knew it, I knew it, well not in the sense of having the slightest idea, but I knew there was something I didn't know!

I thought you could tax a car with the V5C log book. There's normally a series of numbers on the V5C like on the reminder that is used as a confirmation/security code. Otherwise anyone could log on and SORN your car leaving you to pick up the fines.

And why not charge for using credit cards? The DVLA will have to pay a % fee. There is no charge for debit cards.

I suppose requiring the V5C as well as the reg number provides a level of protection against accidentally paying tax for the wrong car.

Also, if you have the V5C in front of you, you can see the address that the car is registered to, so if the address is wrong and you don't receive the tax disc, you can't claim that you didn't know which address they were going to send it to.

That's about all I can think of really.

So basically its because you can't be bothered to look for your V5.

And whilst on the subject, I think it is completely out of order for the taxpayer to have to subsidise your tax disc because you're so broke you have to pay by credit card which means a 2.5% charge by the card company to DVLA.

You can tax using your reminder V11 or your V5/V5C or a V62(at a DVLA office in person)

This is because in order to obtain tax you need to have insurance which covers/or is in the name of, the registered keeper. The only way this can be checked in the PO is with those documents.

I would agree however that if done online theoretically it could be done without those documents as the DVLA person who eventually processes your application could easily check the insurance relates to the RK. But they don't do things logically, or you could cynically suggest that they only allow doing it at the DVLA office without those docs because they know they can charge £25 on top.

You could use a V62 to apply for a new V5C and tax immediately without the docs, but that would cost you an extra £25 and you need to do it at the DVLA local office.
Would you rather pay an extra £25 or look for your V5?

It makes it more difficult for people to steal a car's identity, use it for a stolen car, and get a tax disc to make it appear more legitimate.

Not really, at a PO yes, but the OP was on about online purchase where the tax disc is sent to the RK adress.

And that couldn't possibly get intercepted / burgled / re-directed without permission could it?

Equally they could burgle the original V5 and the car keys. I think you're trying to hard to justify the DVLA's unjustifiable position on this.
