Nuisance calls

This is more of a rant then a question. A couple of months ago I started receiving calls during the day and on answering the phone I hear a bleep, it's a fax machine trying to talk to another fax machine. Sometimes I won't get a call for a couple of weeks, then I might get 5-6 calls a day for several days.

Ok, so somebody has entered my ex-directory number into their fax machine by mistake. Unfortunately, no amount of shouting at my phone when I answer the call will satisfy the fax machine on the other end and stop it from trying to redial me. :( So, I was getting a bit fed up of these calls.

I tried searching the phone number in the hope that I could find the business using it and get a landline number to speak to a human but that was a no go. Next, I phoned BT to report the nuisance calls. They couldn't tell me who it was due to the data protection act and could offer no more help as I'm now a Sky customer (recently moved my line over to them) so they suggested that I phone Sky.

Ok, so I phoned Sky. At this point I was offered two options. The first option was to subscribe to call barring which will allow me to block upto 10 phone numbers for a monthly fee. Option two was to phone the police and report it and then phone Sky back with a crime reference number at which point I would be allowed to change my phone number.

Hang on a minute here..... I'm the one being harrassed yet I either have to pay an additional fee on top of my regular bill to block the spurious calls or change to a new phone number!!! It's utterly ridiculous that I am the one receiving these unwanted calls yet I have to pay by way of increased charges or changing my phone number and inform everyone of that change!

I can understand the data protection act and whatnot but it's so damned frustrating that a call to a human at the company that owns said fax machine would resolve all of my problems with zero expense or hassle. Bloody ridiculous! :(

I'd suggest you join your local Freecycle or Freegle group and get hold of a fax machine yourself. As you have the number to which the fax machine that is calling you is connected, you can then send a suitable reply.

Yeah good idea. I actually have a couple of fax modems kicking about so I might set one of these up and fire off a fax at them. Cheers. :)

if you dont want to go to the bother of setting a fax machine up, just write one out and go to yur newagents or shop doing this service, might just save you time if you dont use the machines/

I was thinking more along the lines of sending messages during whatever inclusive calls periods the OP has.
