I`m 27 years old so that rule is for me, but may be I don`t have to worry about that, because when we completed all documents I pleased the manager to confirm that there is no monthly fee, free internet and telephone banking, no charges when I make payments / except overseas / with my Visa Card, no overdraft and only first three months - minimum 500.00 pounds. I hope he did not lie me.

It isn't a lie, its more of a 'bankers bullsh|t' when i opend the account the woman said to me, you MUST pay in £500 a month to keep the account,

(I just nod my head and said yea you'll get it...) which is a lie of course.

No bank should be like this.. thats why many people dont like the idea with HSBC this (£500 Rule) is like a scare tatic, but at the end of the day its 'business move' to them...

(But if anyone wants to go with HSBC just say YES to the £500 a month and within 20 min you'll have an account :D)

Plus your 27, so maybe they will chase you upon this... or maybe not? because i doubt your the only 27 yr old who cant pay in £500 they cant always contact everyone? who knows.

Even i thought i had to pay in £500, but a little re-search goes a LONG way ;) - because the woman clearly knew im 23 but still insisted that i need to pay in £500 a month, but shes 'selling' it's her role... and she knows damn well i don't need to pay in £500 a month, also the (under 24 rule) is very very short print on HSBC'S site, and they don't mention it at all. I'm sorry, what? Why is it bankers !!!!!!!!? What exactly is wrong with them expecting £500 deposited in the account each month? It's purposely there to stop people opening an account and then not using it for anything, wasting time and resources. Sales staff can't be expected to know every single little detail, and it's not like depositing £500 in and taking it out again (if you have to) takes time (If you're earning less than this are you eating cardboard??).

If you're under 24 then obviously if they try to downgrade your account (they never will close it unless you are in overdraft and not putting any money in for months) you can raise that when they contact you and put a stop to it.

Anyway, speaking from experience, I shifted from HSBC to first direct about 12 months ago. They sent me a letter last week saying I needed to pay in £500 a month or they would downgrade my account to Basic account (the other free account but one which costs them less, but you lose a few benefits of the "Bank account". Letter has a number to call to discuss it with them. I'm sure if I ignore it they will give me another notice before making changes.

    Hmmm

Not really, as one other poster said, its just to 'attract' more money to its business, (you don't really need to slap in £500 to have a HSBC account... what is the world coming to? (oh wait..)

If you're under 24 then obviously if they try to downgrade your account

    They wont,

(clearly says current account £500 a month.. but if your under 24... wont apply to you, and yet you will have the same account/version.. no downgrade required. (long as you use the card etc keep the account busy nothing will change.)

They never will close it unless you are in overdraft

Really?... oh they will close it.. and pass the debt onto a debt collection agency. just because you have an overdraft with them doesn't make you invincible.

(but your fully entitled to your own opinion) :D

And what's wrong with that? They're not a charity!

I suggest you re-read what was said and perhaps check the meaning of "unless" in a dictionary.

Nothing is wrong with that, just its not true? you can get a HSBC account and dont need that £500 bogus rule.

Even i thought that... but little re-search goes a long way :D
