Damaged eBay return - Please help!

Sold a games controller on eBay recently, sent tracked and signed for so all wells so far!
Buyer reported they were having a problem with a button 'sticking' after receipt but as they'd not expanded on that in over a week I'd put it down to it being new.
Have now had the item returned by the buyer without them even bothering to tell me they were
More annoyingly upon looking over the item the screw heads are marked and the SECURITY SEAL : WARRANTY VOID IF REMOVED sticker on the base has been broken - it seems clear they've made a cack handed attempt at home repair before returning it.
To be fair the button does stick and it seems the spring inside has either snapped or fallen out, These are sealed so you can't repair them you must replace.
Where do i stand? If the buyer had reported the problem and asked to return i would have had no concerns asking the supplier to repair or investigate and returning the item or refunding but with the seal broken obviously I'm left holding an item that the buyer has paid for but I've no idea where to go next - There's no dispute open re the item and the buyer has used tracked postage to return
Any ideas?

Am at a real loss with this one as the buyer still hasn't made any contact regarding the item! :eek:0

Did they send the item back signed for
edit sorry seems they did - have you asked them why they have broken the seal?0 -
Are you able to look at the tracking on-line to see if it actually says that it has been received?
I'd just ignore them for now, and if they eventually send a message, just say that you didn't realise that it was YOUR controller that had been sent back, as the only one you received had the security seal broken.Should've = Should HAVE (not 'of')
Would've = Would HAVE (not 'of')
No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)0 -

This is the confusing thing - the tracking number has the item delivered to a local post office, and signed for, presumably by staff.
There aren't any details in with the item re the sender, I'm confuzzled - I feel as though now i have the item back i should refund due to the fault but when i do that i may as well dump the item as no repairer will touch it due to the seal being broken!
Not a cheap one either, went for over £50 quids which I'm not wanting to lose0
