My girls love strawbs and harped on at me to buy some just after christmas so gave in and got some egyptian ones - talk about manky! No tasete at all except a slightly plasticy one, girls were disgusted.
When do strawbs start putting runners out? My two hens had a go at the young leaves earlier in the year when they accidently got out of the run (in half an hour they anhialated the garden and young shoots:() and cleared them, I also replanted in a strawb bed as were outgrowing the pots and this is the first year I haven't had any runners off them or is it too early?0 -

Not sure if we have best climate in the world for strawberries although its probably one of the best. I agree about varieties though. Like most plants there are many many varieties of lettuce, peas, strawberries. I suspect growers for supermarkets grow certain varieties only because ie they are dictated to by the supermarkets or because they find the variety is a good one for processing/packaging and shelf life or because they favoured for there resident to insects or abundant size and not flavour which is everything
I do grow my own but no but I cant 10 months of the year nor many people can because they dont have the landcootambear wrote: »

Therefore, variety X grown in a polytunnel in Spain, tastes worse than variety X grown in fields in england.
But heres the big but.
Variety is more important than origin.
There are about 1,000 varieties of strawbs.
99% of which are better than the supermarkets.
You know me well I hope. I think that this self sufficiently mallarky is vainglorious.
But this is about taste.
Supermarket varieties of strawbs taste like minature turnips.
Grow yer own from tasty varieties.0 -

I think I had some of those 'Elsanta' plants but they didn't survive the winter.
The Cambridge Favourite have had no probs during the snow and harsh frosts though.
