Cannot connect to xbox360

Hello, I had a new d-link 2680 delivered today for the talk talk network previously having a thomson which failed. I cannot now connect wirelessly with my sons xbox upstairs.
It is prompting me to enter the wep key/wap passphrase. There is a wireless password written on the router which I have tried to no avail. There is also a mac code which I have also tried.
The error message is sometimes telling me that the console cannot work with a static ip address. I had trouble getting the old thomson to connect as the password was very case sensitive. I've tried various ways of entering the pasword to no avail. The console is picking up the signal. Any ideas? Many thanks.

Hopefully the request for a wep key is a generic message, as I would expect the new router to be using WPA or WPA2 rather than WEP.
Have you got a wirless laptop or PC that you can test the connection and passphrase with, otherwise you could still log in to the new router from a wired PC to check the settings.0 -
Hello, I believe the ne router is using wpa2. I dont have a laptop.0

Ok, the wireless password on the router sticker is definitely the one you should be using. It will have to be typed exactly (as will the network name), including any mix of upper and lowercase letters. Also be careful of similar characters/numbers, eg O/0 B/8 I/1 S/5 etc.
Is this the new xbox slim with built-in wireless, or the original one with a wireless adapter (if this type, is it a Microsoft one, or a 3rd party bridging adapter).
When it mentions about not supporting a static IP, check the Xbox settings to make sure something like 'obtain an IP address automatically' is selected.0 -
Hello Davb, the xbox is the new with built in adapter. one-christmas. It appears that the router is not assigning an automatic ip address, something to do with dchp being blocked. You can alter it by accessing your router settings something which I do not know how to do.0

You should be able to access the router settings from a wired PC, which I assume is where you are posting from.
Open your web browser, and type 192.168.1.1 as the address (nothing else, no http etc) and go. It should come up with the router login page, and ask for a username and password to access it - I think the talktalk default is usually admin/admin.
After that you are looking for something like 'enable DHCP' probably under advanced settings, but it varies between router makes, especially with customised firmware which talktalk use.
If you are not confident with this, it may be better to speak with TalkTalk support.0 -
davb-many thanks we appear to have cracked it. For me its the most difficult computer task I've ever done. In the router settings dhcp was on and yet console reports no ip address. What I had to do was assign made up ip, then enter computers subnet mask, then default gateway. My son is now playing black ops with his mates and the earache has stopped. Many thanks for your help. Hopefully the xbox will perform when its switched on tomorrow.0

Glad you got it working. These things are a bit daunting if you are not used to them - especially when the kids are wanting it sorted yesterday!0
