Thanks to evrybody for your replies - some food for thought and nice to get some diffrerent viewpoints.
Extra thanks to Photome for mentioning the magic words 'trade in'.
Don't know why I didn't think of it before. Jessops aren't exactly the cheapest out there, so I'm pretty sure that if I took the 1100D in settlement and traded it in elsewhere against my model of choice then the amount I'd lose on the trade in would be offset by the cheaper price for my model of choice.
I'll let you know how I get on....
