Hi Sam,
If you are looking for a monitored system speak to your local Police Crime Prevention Officer first, as they will only respond to approved systems and these have to be installed by an approved installer (SSAID, NACOS).
When we were looking for ours one natrional company gave an silly numbers quote and a great sales pitch, but we found out that our local force won't attend their systems.
Once you've got the information it's time for the money saving mantra "shop around", we saved in excess of £500 on our system and anything up to £15+ per month on the monitoring costs.
Most Police forces will not attend an alarm activation unless neighbours report seeing someone in the property. With approved monitored systems, validation is confirmed by 2 sensors being activated and the Police will attend.

This is where it's important to shop around, our monitoring is £12 a month! There are significant savings on both system costs and monitoring costs to be had.

Hello
I’ve invested in a wire free Yale alarm system available from either Homebase or Argos. They are really easy to fit and if you have an intruder in your house when you are on holiday for example it can call up to 5 telephone numbers to notify you and your family. Also you can activate/deactivate the system over the phone and even listen in and shout down it to deter the burglar (amazing). They retail at £199 but I have just been on the Argos website and they have reduced it to £169.99 (bargain).
This is the description
Yale High Security Communication Alarm System
·Wire free - no connecting wires between PIRs and siren box.
·Connect to your telephone line and it will contact your mobile or land line phone when the alarm is activated.
·Control panel, 1 door contact, 1 PIR and siren box.
·Purchase additional PIRs to protect further rooms.
·Size (W)30, (L)23, (H)25cm.
·Yale 7 day help line 01902 635998.
finally if you require you can additional products to it e.g. panic alarm in the form of a whatch. Smoke detector, remote control key fob etc
Hope this helps

I got several quotes before going for ACE (London SE Area) I can dig out contacts if anyone is interested.
The Insurance Company insisted on a monitored service and the Police have different responses to monitored and non-monitered installations. Generally, the monitered services that the Police will respond to do not allow DIY systems - maybe others have found a way around this?
Also, I was trying to find a good place for the following so any moderators who know a better home can re-post. The monitored systems require the call unit to be hard-wired in to the line. I am looking to upgrade to ADSL Broadband and installing a filter is difficult. ACE wanted £94 plus parts plus VAT! I found a supplier of a hard-wired filter for about £12,50 delivered for anyone interested:
