 I love Pompeii!!! It obviously depends how interested one is in history, but I found it fascinating.

Me too....but I really preferred Herculaneum...not quite so big, less touristy and easy to get to on the train and you can get around it without having to be guided. If you do go to this area I would suggest the walk up Vesuvius....there is a cafe near the top!

Hope you have a great holiday wherever you decide to go :)

We recently viusited the cinque terre (3 villages) region. It was very traditional and picturesque. A quick and easy train ride from Pisa. This is the only time I've visited Italy but would highly recommend. We had a great time!

Definately include Florence, it is absolutely beautiful and so romantic. I flew into Pisa, stayed in Florence for 3 days. Got the train to Rome and stayed for 4 days then travelled south to see family.

The trains in Italy are quite cheap and good so travelling between places is easy.

Have a wonderful trip and let us know how you got on.

We love Italy and try to fit in a trip at least once a year via cheap fights. We have been all over and Venice is where my heart is!! but Positano, Ravello, and Amalfi are wonderful too. As are the lakes.....I would decide where you can fly from and plan your trip from there, some cities are more easily reached directly than others. I can recommend hotels in most cities if you need any help.

Considering a holiday to Italy this year (1st week of August)

Never been to Italy before, no idea what to expect or where to go.

    2 adults 30/32
Like to see interesting things (just got back from a Paris trip, E.Tower & Moulin Rouge and a couple of parks visited)
Always wanted to see Pompei ruins
Like good restaurants/bars, not too bothered about late night nightlife, usually flat out by 12.
She likes fashon/shopping. Not so much buying but just dragging me round for hours on end loking at silly outfits.

Any suggestions on which areas of Italy we should be looking at?

    Thanks.

Remember, that Italy in August is the peak holiday season for the Italians, so hotels etc in popular locations get quite heavily booked. There are lots of good fashion/shoe outlets, but again these sometimes just shut down for a couple of weeks.
If you are hiring a car, try to keep off the main roads at August weekends as they can be horrendous. Also, if driving beware of the restricted zones for non residents in many towns ..... the fines are high!!
Coastal restaurants can be extremely pricey, as can drinks.
Have lived here for 6 years, so hope this helps.
