Car boot sale - what sells well?

Hi all

I'll be going to a car boot sale next month, and I'm looking to get rid of some of the junk lying around the house. Thing is, I have far more than I can get rid of in one go, and I'm wondering what sells well at car boots?

I have electronic gadgets, lots of computer leads, clothes, books, lego, a few Xbox 360 games, an ipod touch, an old laptop, etc.

I know some of these things will sell well on ebay, but wondered if I'd get much at a car boot, and if so, which bits should I prioritise taking?

Many thanks :-)

It will often depend on the location of the boot sale and who is bargain hunting and how keenly your items are priced. Opinion on this forum is that books don't do that well. If your electronic/computer items are well past their "sell by date", you will get little for them. Visit your intended sale as a buyer and have a look at what's on offer and the prices.

Lego sells very well but you would be much better selling it on e bay. The person buying it from you will be ebaying it!

My friend did one last weekend and she said it was nightmare. Everyone wanted the stuff she had for 10p and she had a horrible day. I think in the end she made £35 which she said she could have doubled if she had ebayed it.

  • I think the more 'junky' your items are the more popular they are at carboots. I did one a few weeks ago and had mainly clothes, dvds, books, cuddly toys and bric-a-brac

I came home with most things, despite everything only being 50p each. I even had some in-line skates still in their box, a garden strimmer, leather handbag and struggled to get 50p for them. My books were 50p each or 3 for a £1 and I still came home with most of them.

Ebay is definitely better for clothes, dvds etc

Forget the books, no one spends more than 20p on a paperback now so don't bother unless you have decent quality hard backed ones.

We always seem to sell a mixture of stuff so it's hard to put your finger on it.

Just beware of the traders who get there early and want to rob you of anything decent before you've even got it out of the car!

We did one on saturday there, they were all looking for mobile phones and gold/silver jewellery. Books did not sell well, shoes sold well. Also vases, jars, housey stuff sold well. DVDs and cds sold for £1/£1.50 play station games £2-3. Sold curtains for £10 and chest of drawers for £3. Made £200 in all between 2 of us, so £90 each once you take off pitch money. Kids teddys did not sell or clothes. hope this helps

Someone on the ebay board did one yesterday, https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/3247238
Her books went well. Maybe it depends on where you are.

I take ds books that he's grown out of and they always sell really well :) I've also found clothes sell well, guess it depends on the location although I have done car boots at the same place and some weeks stuff flies other weeks it doesn't get touched :)

Last one I did was in Halifax.
I did find that a lot of people wanted stuff for pennies.
I felt that childrens clothes were most in demand. Followed by small electricals.
It depends on the location. Other places might be more interested in bric a brac.
