:jRang the G.P this morning to see if the dla form had arrived so that I could book dd in for an appt to go over her care needs (as he only gave me about 30 seconds to talk about her in the last appt) and they said the form has already come in and been filled in and sent back. I then rang dla and just as I rang a decision had been made and the computer was just updating it. They have awarded daughter middle rate care and lower rate mobility. I'm so relieved as I will now be able to pay for daughter to have some after school tuition to help her with her schoolwork and some 1 to 1 swimming lessons. Only 1 disappointment I have is that I really needed high rate care to get help with her school transport so i still have this problem. What is the criteria for high rate care? I'm not gonna push it and ask for a reconsideration for high rate as they may decide to drop it to lower knowing my luck.
Do I need to do anything or inform tax credits or do dla do that? Also what happens next, will payment be backdated to the day the form was stamped (18th march) and how long does it take to receive payment? I assume its paid monthly? Sorry for all the questions, I'm just so relieved as everything else is going wrong at the minute so this will really help

You will get a higher tax credit award now if you get over the basic level of £10pw, so let them know ASAP.
They will backdate it to the day they sent you the forms if you sent them back on time.0 -
well done ! do you work as you could claim carers allowance. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0

No I dont work but my husband works 60 hours a week0

you need to call tc and inform them, also ring the people who deal with CA, not sure who it is as i have never claimed it but you will be able to as you do not work
also the family fund may be able to help you with some things, not sure about swimming lesons but they do offer to help with lots of things,
well done tea bag at least it is one thing less to have to cope with, maybe inform the school and the other people you are dealing with at the minute it may or may not give you some extra help, if DLA think your DD is in need of extra help then now surely other people have to stand up and take this more seriously
to get HRC your daughter has to have night time needs0 -

Hi, Teabag well done for getting your daughter her award.
As for Carer's Allowance whatever your husband earns or how many hours he works that is not taken into account when applying for Carer's Allowance as it's based on what you (the caree) earn/hours worked.
If you apply please be aware that it is a taxable benefit and can effect your tax credits (by how much I don't know and if it'll go up or down but I'm sure there are a few tax credit experts here).
As a carer though you are entitled to an assessment by Social Services and this is where you may get the help with transport you so badly need.
Good luck and let us know how things go.0 -
Oh my goodness I didnt think of it like that,I will put in a claim for carers allowance immediately in that case. Do you think it would be worth giving social services a ring then now? or would it be the council with regards to transport?
Also regarding the higher rate care, my daughter does have night time needs. firstly getting her to settle off at night is the first issue and she is always last up, usually she falls off around midnight and i have to put the other girls in their brothers room 4-5 times a week as she will do all she can to keep them awake. Then she will often wake in the night and will wonder downstairs to look for things to steal (usually food). Also she will wet the bed 2-3 times a week and obviously I'm up with her to change sheets and wash her etc. I put this in the form and sent in 2 months worth of daily diary to show them what life is like so I'm not sure why she doesn't fit the criteria for hrc.
I daren't appeal it though incase it backfires and they drop it down to lower rate and also it will hold up payments if I appeal it and I really need the help now not in 10mths time when the appeal date comes through.0 -

But what care does going down in the middle of the night to steal food require?2-3 times a week for wetting the bed isn't a huge amount so that will effect it I'd imagine. With regards to settling her I think it's more a case of after they've gone to bed/sleep they probably look at. It's the details of these things that you need to consider before thinking about high rate.
My son gets high rate care and is on the severe end of autism.I have to wake him during the night to change his nappy(or get him to do it) as he doesn't realise if he's wet or soiled, then often change his bed and his pyjamas. It can then take forever to get him to sleep as he's confused.I have to do this every night.I have to be incredibly alert to make sure he isn't doing something he shouldn't,I've had to put a custom built gate (bare in mind he's 12) on his bedroom to ensure his safety. If one of the neighbours babies cries (until the soundproofing is done) I'm up with him preventing him from self harming and trying to calm him down..same with any alarms that go off.If he's unwell and is sick he just lays there half asleep or trying to continue sleeping so I have to be extra vigilant and force him to at the very least sit up,have to watch and check up on him for many things tbh lol and because he has bowel problems and incredibly frequent diahorrea the night time nappy wakes can be awful LOL
There are many things that could lead to night time care but it's all in what is extra care and what could occasionally be seen as something that just happens etc Have a think about itIf women are birds and freedom is flight are trapped women Dodos?0 -

Just to add to that, years ago my son was (Rather stupidly) put on middle rate care and no mobility..instead of appealling at the time I requested they look at it again and they sent me more forms under the guise of change of circumstance (which it wasn't) and he was then awarded high rate care and high rate mobility until the age of 16 (was 4 years ago now) when he should apply as an adult. The payments didn't stop while it was being looked at.So,if in the future you think that it should be different, then you can always do that.If women are birds and freedom is flight are trapped women Dodos?0 -

I see where you are coming from but my daughter also has a food obsession so she will not stop eating. For example, my husband works in food storage and often gets freebies. About 5 weeks ago he came home with a box of galxy bars (the big ones that retail around £1.50 each) that had 24 bars in. I woke up one night to find daughter downstairs eating them....she had got through 21 bars!!!! She is also saying she is fat and i'm obviously concerned about an eating disorder.
My point is she does need care in the night, if I hadn't come downstairs goodness knows where it would have ended. On top of this she has no sense of danger, hardly sleeps and cannot tolerate boredom and added this means night times can be dangerous as she will wake up and try and get out of the house 'to play' at silly hours and by any means e.g a few months back she climbed out of the bedroom window in the early hours. I now keep all windows and doors locked (goodness knows what would happen if there was a fire though) and sweet food in the outside shed. I understand she doesn't need the care that many do during the night though. The only reason I was hoping for hrc is because thats the only way the council will consider giving me transport for her to school.0 -

I presume you have window locks now?! hope so! You need to think of these things in detail but also how often they occur...It may also be easier (IF it's within their range of requirements) when you have a diagnosis for her too.
As for the galaxy...I'd probably do that if I had the chance:rotfl: On a serious note,my son will eat everything if he has it infront of him or doesn't have bounderies given. So make sure she either has no access or you are firm with bounderies until she gets the point,I've read you other threads and while you state she doesn't know the alphabet etc she clearly has intelligence there otherwise she would never have survived to secondary school...so there is a chance of instilling this things it's just bloomin hard work! But have a think about it all :-)
Also, find out if the transport is due to high rate care or whether it's high rate mobility..never heard of transport for school being related to either to be honest and my son has had transport to school (his own taxi and then his own minibus -no other kids) provided for him since he first started school and DLA never came into it.If women are birds and freedom is flight are trapped women Dodos?0
