Upvc back door - locking problem

My back door has developed a locking problem.

I usually have to struggle and struggle these days to get the key to turn properly in the lock to lock it. Unlocking is no problem - still as usual.

A friend of mine said that when he started experiencing similar problems it turned out to be because the door hadnt been made well enough in the first place. The glass "windows" are heavier than the rest of the door and one of them had shifted to one side and this had resulted in the door getting "weighed down" to one side and his resultant door lock problem.

His door has 2 "windows" - mine just has the top "window" in the style I picked. The door is out of guarantee period and the firm concerned had a really awful "Attitude" problem anyway - I got yelled at/rude comments when I had them back to finish the job off properly (because they had omitted to do part of the job on the front door - which was also being replaced by them at the time).

So - I cant call on this firm - if they still exist anyway.

Any thoughts on this:
- whether you think its a window shift causing this?
- whether you have any other ideas what might be causing this?
- whether other firms would do a repair (rather than replacement) job on the door for me and how much they would charge me for it?
- whether its possible for me to fix bolts top and bottom on the door (given the construction of upvc doors).

I'm not willing to spend much money on this house any more - so need to resolve this as cheaply as possible.

Thanks for your time.

Ceridwen, I had a similar problem, and it turned out that the hinges needed adjusting. Does it look like the sealed unit has shifted? Or do you keep you windows cleaner than mine ;-).

The door has probably dropped a bit so the bolt doesn't engage properly with the frame rebates.

my door lock did that in the back door. the door was fitted before we moved in, so no idea who fitted it. we called out a glazing chap and he fitted a new lock. no problems after that.
