Leaves going yellow.....

Is it fairly normal for the leaves of recently transplanted plants to go a bit yellow?

Almost everything that I've put out in the allotment is yellowish. What can I do to get them back to green?

the bottom leaves on my tomato plants are doing this, I assumed it to be shock from the wind battering they took a few days ago. I have no real idea though

Lack of minerals can do this so plants that need transplanting or have recently moved seem to get this. Plus the recent cold spell and wind doesn't help. A bit of feed usually perks them up.

I planted seeds in a tray that has cells and the leaves went yellow.... I never realised that the cells never had holes in the bottom so the leaves went yellow... That was the first sign I new that something was wrong... Fixed the problem and they are fine now...

A lot of the stuff I put out in the garden is doing this this year.

As it was so warm I put them out about 2/3 weeks as opposed to waiting till the end of May as usual.

I reckon the flippin wind has burnt a lot of the leaves.

My tom plants look skinny and my aub and peppers all look like they have had a battering.

My runner beans have loads of dry/brittle leaves too.

If you've got the resources to make it then a weak solution of comfrey is ideal when watering newly transplanted plants. Or diluted wormery juice, or very dilute seaweed extract. You can buy this last at most garden centres and make it up to the weakest dilution as for foliar feed. It helps the young plants to get established if you give them a small amount of instantly availible micronutrients like this. Same for plants that have been subjected to things like wind stress and damage...it's just a wee tonic for them. Don't overdo it though...two feeds three or four days apart is usually enough.

  • Thanks guys - I think I have some of the seaweed extract although it might be a bit old

I have got an Ilex Golden King that I planted about 6 weeks ago. It shed a few leaves, which I expected it to do. But I thought that it would have picked up by now, but it seems to be getting worse. Anyone got any tips? I think I may also have over-watered it in the first few weeks.

Ah, it will be fine unless it's actually growing mould. Dilute it down well and sprinkle away.

  • My rosemary was doing this, but that was due to the soil/compost mix in the windowbox not holding enough moisture for the vegetation - they were transpiring more than I could give them. Changed tactic and mixed some manure in with the existing stuff and it seems to be recovering quite quickly.

But then again, any more rain and I'm going to see Noah floating down the street. Trouble is, my house was built on the old river bed and the river itself is culverted underneath my house. Never been here in a storm before - I do hope the river decides to stay where she is put.

Oh well, it'll test whether building the house up a metre above street level has worked.
