Gas oven turning itself off

My belling gas oven has an odd problem. It has two sections - a big one and a small one. When i turn and press down the dial to release the gas, then hit the ignition button to light the flame - it does that with no problem. However, when i release the gas dial, the flame goes out (and no more gas comes out).
I do not have the same problem with the large section - however the gas does occasionally go out when I open the door.
Anyone have any ideas? It might be cooincidence, but 2 of my neighbours have also had similar problems with their gas ovens.

I'm no expert but there is a valve on gas appliances that is heated operated so that if the flame goes out the valve closes and shuts of the gas. Obviously this has to get hot initially to stay open.
So I reckon it can only be one of to things:-
1. Faulty valve (most likely)
2. Fault with gas supply (ie men working on it elswhere) this should only be temporary but might be a leak perhaps in the street if it is affecting more househods.0 -
I have exactly the same problem when I go to visit a relative a couple of times a year. She has a gas oven too.
What I do is press down on the dial and turn half way to temperature. Hit the ignition and wait for it to light. I continue to keep the dial pushed in and turn the dial up to the temperature I need then hold for a bit longer and then release.
I find it often needs the extra hold to make sure the flame holds.
It is a bit of trial and error, some times it works first time, others I have to do it another time. A bit like we used to do with our tv decades ago, but instead of banging on the top of the tv, this time it is a wiggle and a hold and eventually it works

Sounds like the thermocouple has gone.0

yep, if it has a thermocouple fitted then 100% that is the problem, you can buy universal thermocouple kits from screwfix i think, you should be able to replace it without breaking into the gas line as well, so no gas safe/corgi intervention needed , probably cost you about £15 ish0

99% sure its the thermocouple.Get some gorm.0

cool, cheers guys... going to go read about a thermocouple (and i'll need to ask the neighbours what oven part they just had delivered yesterday..)0

A thermocouple is known as a FFD or flame failure device, the bulb end sits in the flame and when it heats sends a signal to the other end which screws in the gas valve, this signal allows the gas valve to open fully and ignite the oven, sometimes the bulb can get knocked and wont sit in the flame properly which can also cause the same issue, not that im telling you to stick your head in a gas oven but thats whaat you need to do to check it is sitting in the flame properly0

ok.. so the thermocouple, when broken, doesn't send a signal keeping the gas valve open when i release the button? That does seem to make sense to why it would behave in this manner.
It's the small, top oven.. so i can't easily put my head inside to take a look (not that i'd know what i'm looking for!) - is this one of them? http://www.screwfix.com/p/super-universal-thermocouple/16098?_requestid=1263648#
Yes.. i know it says its for a boiler..0
