Where to get a good DVD burner???

My darling husband has asked for a DVD burner for Christmas (yes, I have told him to get a life!!)
I know it should be 'internal' and 'black' but aside from that I'm pretty much clueless
If anyone could advise me on which one to get and a website I can order it from I'd be eternally grateful. I've been searching around on all the usual price comparison sites, but seeing as I don't really know what I'm looking for, it's a bit hard to compare :o
I'd be looking to spend up to £40 on it (last of the big spenders I know!)

Last one I bought was an Asus DRW-1608P3S (both internal and black) from http://www.overclock.co.uk. Don't know if you can get it cheaper but I've been very happy with it and seems to be compatible with just about all forms of recordable DVD.

Good prices, good advice from svp if asked, customer ratings on products.

The only thing I would say is a minnium is that it's Dual Layer burner.

It's a standard that is coming more to the fore as the price of the blank media is coming down.

Bascialy a dual layer burner allows you to store up to twice the storage onto 1 special dual layer disk than you get on a normal dvd disk. It will still allow you to burn on normal dvd/cdr disks.

There is one in your price range that will allow you to "write your own label" called Lightscripe, when you use a special made disk for the burner. I am not reccomending this product but trying to give you some ideas

Discs and other supplies are available from the site.

Perhaps with your new found knowledge you should quiz the other half abit without letting him know, what type he may get for xmas.

They have more than one option of delivery, so you could order it by 3pm Monday and if it's in stock, it will be with you tuesday.

I brought a burner from them and have had excellant service and after care from them.

Ps I don't work for them, just a very happy customer of theirs!!

Thank you all for getting back to me so quickly with your suggestions. I've ordered the LightScribe one along with some of the LightScribe DVDs - think hubby will be well impressed!!:T

I have just got a refund for my NED ND4550A DVD writer that really played up. I am now on the market for a DVD internal black burner. doesn't need light scribe or DVD RAM. Can anyone recommend something. Reliability is far more important to me than speed. Also, would ideally like free postage but that might be too much to ask for! Saw a Pioneer 111 on SVP that seems to have good feedback http://svp.co.uk/products-solo.php?pid=1020
  • yup the pioneer is good - go for it.
