Tax rebate?

Hi all,my son worked full time until last year when he was made redundant,he paid full tax from April until the end of June,he is now on Jobseekers, they told him he would probably be due a tax rebate but have now informed him he isn't?,is this because of jobseekers?it used to be if you finished work part way through a tax year you got a rebate, any help would be appreciated.

What does his P60 say? It should show what his allowance is, what he earned and the tax he paid. From that, he should be able to deduce if he is entitled to a rebate. Who has said that he isn't entitled to a rebate?

Get him to input his income from employment/jobseekers into the HMRC tax checker

Forums can be/are a good guide to entitlement and it is good practice to back it up with clarification from the relevant department/specialist with written confirmation to safeguard yourself.

It may be that the job centre do not have all the details that would enable them to pay any rebate that may be due. Has he had a P60u from them and if so what were the figures from it. Also if you can advise the details from the P45 part 1A then someone will work out if a rebate may be due.

Your son needs to add up his full pay before tax from 6 April 2010 ( start of new tax year ) until his redundancy and then add in the amount of JSA and any other income, such as interest on savings, that he received up to 5 April 2011 ( end of that tax year ). If this total amount comes to less than £6475, assuming he had a straightforward single person tax allowance, any tax he paid on his earnings should be rebated to him. HMRC deal with this....slowly. Hope he's kept his paperwork which will make this much easier !
