I want to use opendns to block sites on computers on my network. I also want to be able to access these sites on other computers on the same newtork.
Would opendns allow me to distinguish between individual computers this way?

Yes you can,
With openDNS you sign up for a free account and then change the DNS servers on the PCs you want to block, to static address and enter the open DNS server numbers. you may have to enter a default gateway number as well, this number will be the address of your router e.g.
Default gateway 192.168.1.1
DNS1 208.67.220.220
DNS 2 208.67.222.222
Once you have done that, you can log into a control panel on the open DNS website to block the site you want, it even has pre made filters, Like block all !!!!!!, block scam sites ect

On the computers you do not want to access the sites, change the network adapter properties (TCP IP) on the selected computers, and use the bottom part setting to use the opendns servers ip addresses, then setup the sites banned on your account at opendns.0

I have had a look at the tcp settings for my main pc ( which I do not want to block from websites nd is the only one which is connected via LAN ) and it has the 'obtain dns server address automatically' settings checked but it is still blocking.
I think I might need a bit more help as I don't quite get it.0 -

Errrr. sorry I need more info from you, have you currently signed up for open dns and set a blocking list?
if so where did you enter the opendns, dns server address your router? To alcohol! The cause of... and solution to... all of life's problems!:beer:0 -
Find out the DNS server of your ISP, and manually enter these into the TCP/IP settings of the computers you want to bypass OpenDNS.
This will certainly be how your <assumption> teenagers will bypass it as well </assumption>
From what you are saying, it sounds as though you've put the OpenDNS servers into the router? Either that, you've used your computer to set up OpenDNS and test it, but put the DNS settings back to normal but haven't run "ipconfig /flushdns"?0 -
Thanks for the help everyone. Russ provided the solution in the end.
I entered the opendns servers into my tcp settings when I should have used my isp (virginmedia)'s dns servers addresses.
I have now put the correct addresses in and I am able to surf where I want on my main PC. I reckon I have got 2 or 3 years of not having to worry before the kids figure out how to defeat my skullduggery:(0 -
