Hi,

I am looking into lift-sharing. I don't drive but would like a lift into work in exchange for petrol money. I've had a look around on the internet and found the following sites:

rideshare
gocarshare
nationalcarshare
liftshare

Can anyone suggest any others, or other ways to find someone with a spare seat in their car going my way?

thanks
J

To be 100% legal you'll need to find a driver who has hire or reward insurance if your going to give then petrol money.

Surely not if they're not making a profit on it? I believe it's up to 45ppm before anything kicks in?

If you apply the letter of the law it's hire or reward, no mention of profit.

    I'm pretty sure not.

I do some voluntary work using my motor and get paid 40ppm for that. We are 100% legal and there is no need for us to have 'hire and reward', we just have to inform our insurers of what we do.

    That, I'm afraid is wrong.

So let's apply the letter of the law...
The Road Traffic Act 1988, s.150 allows the user of a motor vehicle to carry passengers, who share the cost of the journey, without this being regarded as use for hire or reward provided that
    (a) the vehicle is not adapted to carry more than eight passengers, and is not a motorcycle;
    (b) the total amount paid does not exceed the running costs (which includes depreciation); and
    (c) the arrangement for payment was made at the beginning of the journey.

In effect, the passenger contributes to petrol, oil and maintenance costs and the motorist’s normal certificate of car insurance suffices even though it excludes use for hire or rewards.

    So wrong.

Even if you only take petrol money you'll never make a profit with the cost of insurance, depreciation, servicing, tyres, consumables etc.

Go for liftshare. Much the biggest network so they've got the most journeys available to share.
