Banging sound when closing taps

Everytime we open the taps in our house and then close them, we hear a loud banging sound. Sounds like pipes banging against something. It only started happening recently. If the taps are closed slowly its ok when closed fast then you hear the thuds. Weird.
Any advice?

Water hammer. Try turning down the stop valve and see if it makes a difference.I used to be indecisive but now I am not sure.0

As ariba10, most probaly water hammer, if it persists you may need to fit something similar to this:

I think the correct answer is usually related to fixing all the pipework properly. Having said that, it is always the hardest solution to achieve. I'd check the tap washer aspect but would also consider the possibility of the water utility "improving" the local pressure as a contributing factor.A house isn't a home without a cat.

I have writer's block - I can't begin to tell you about it.
You told me again you preferred handsome men but for me you would make an exception.

I should mention that sounds occurs when I close all taps, switching of the shower (not electric)0

So the most likely pipe that is moving is the main feed up to the header tanks.Mr_Mister wrote:I should mention that sounds occurs when I close all taps, switching of the shower (not electric)A house isn't a home without a cat.

This is what I was thinking. My tap started doing exactly the same thing last week.BobProperty wrote:would also consider the possibility of the water utility "improving" the local pressure as a contributing factor.
Can it cause any damage/bursts?0 -
When my pipes started to bang when I turned them off, I cleared it by turning them all on for several minutes! To Dare is To Do:beer:0
