For a week or so I am getting an error coming up shortly after start up which says
error in C:/windows/system32/nvcpl.dll
Missing entry nv start up
Thick as I am re computers, I deduced this meant nvidia and went to the site and did a driver check and downloaded an up to date driver. I thought that would stop the error message but nope, it still appears a couple of minutes after start up.
Can anyone help please?

You were right in thinking its to do with nvidia

I would follow the advice given on that page and uninstall then reinstall your drivers (uninstall first, just reinstalling doenst guarantee overwriting already existing files depending on the installer).
If it doesnt work in a normal system environment try in safemode (access by pressing f8 during system startup before you see the starting windows screen)0
