Question - old building society account

I have just found my old (1986) pass book for Leamington Spa Building Society which was never closed and had some savings in it. It has since been taken over by Coventry Building Society. I have never had any correspondence from them about the transfer of my account to them and as I said I have never closed my account with LSBS.
My question is; do I have a leg to stand to attempt to try and get my money back of them? I'm not holding out much hope but it is my cash and I feel the carpet baggers of yesteryear have my cash for free.
Any advice would be welcome.
Greg.

Where do you think you might get the best answer? A forum of people who don't know, or actually calling the Coventry Building Society and asking them directly?
What makes you assume it is not still there?0 -
You have nothing to loose by calling the Coventry Building Society and asking them
Which is exactly the same as the last poster said but put in a nicer way

LSBS was taken over by Bradford & Bingley which eventually ended up with (eeeeeeeek ! ) Santander.
That's probably the best route to follow.0 -
Cheers OS - I've written to them but not holding out much hope...0

I just googled "lost account" and came up with this :-
The British Bankers Association, the Building Societies Association and National Savings and Investments (NS&I), have launched a joint venture, My Lost Account to replace separate account tracing tools. Use this to find lost current accounts, savings accounts or premium bonds. It's estimated the unclaimed cash in these could be nearly £1 billion, so it's worth it.
Strangely enough, this was in a link from some site that I remember visiting recently, now what was it called ?
Oh yes, I remember now. Moneysavingexpert.com or something like that0 -
You will find a number of other threads here discussing trying to reclaim money from dormant accounts with Santander. In each case Santander has claimed to have no knowledge and say that they are not required to keep records for more than 6(?) years.

Is there more than £100 in it? If so you may be due the proceeds of shares that were issued to you and later sold by B&B.Sadly its santandire you,re dealing with so you may be in for a fight.I have a deep burning indifference0

building societies will help to track old accounts in my experience"enough is a feast"...old Buddist proverb0

Unclaimed shares were sold in 2004 when they still had value. The proceeds can be claimed up to March 2013.
