An Epiphany?

Greetings All

This week was a time of a small epiphany for me regarding my self worth and clearing my debts.:j

Once in a while some of the guys in work go over to another person’s house and we have a card night and social evening. One such card night was coming up last night (Sat). I would have like to go but something in me said NO. For the first time in ages I listened to this rather than go ahead anyway and possibly loose some money playing cards. During the few days preceding this night out when someone asked me whether I was going, my reply was sorry I’d love to but at the moment can’t afford it.

The Epiphany came when I realised that.
  • It felt good to be honest even in a small way to friends about finances not being good.
  • It felt good to stay at home and relax about knowing that wasn’t spending money that would be better served in my bank account clearing debts
  • The friends still like me.( my friendship is not gauged on how much I contribute financially)
  • My self worth is not dependant on what I perceive other people think about my financial position.
I hope this doesn’t sound a little preachy. But for the first time I feel good about not spending money.

Long may it continue!

Well done - it sounded as though it was hard to say the first time, but it will be easier from now on, and you will save some serious money as well.

yes well done bambi ... good to resist the impulse that says you've got to do what your friends/workmates are doing, even if it costs money you can't afford
  • Hi bambi.

Didn't sound in the least bit preachy to me.

Sounded like someone enjoying that moment when you realise you've 'turned a corner'. I hope we can help you even more on here to get your debts down.

    Well done.

    me,neither..well done and welcome
  • Well done Bambi!!

I hate to say it, but at 26, I still give in to peer pressure. It's terrible really. Every Friday, we all go to my friends house, and if I say we're not coming I get the guilt treatment and end up going. We don't spend a fortune, a few beers and a takeaway, but I know that it probably all adds upto £80 a month. I have included this amount in my DMP to start in the new year. I get more flack than any of the others because I'm working. But, we have the largest household (2 adults, 2 kids vs. 1 adult, 2 kids for most of our friends), I'm working (everyone else raising kids, still at home). I have explained that I also have the highest amount of debt. Just not very understanding friends in that respect. More of a 'live for today' mentality. I've suggested to my OH that we cut it to 2 Fridays each month, that way we'll have an extra £40 to throw at something.
