EnergyShare - British Gas

Not sure how much this has been mentioned but here's some information for anyone potentially interested...

Tomorrow will see the launch of BG's new renewable energy tariff energyshare.

energyshare is an innovative idea that aims to fundamentally change the way people source, use and generate their energy.

At the moment only around 2% of homes are on renewable electricity tariffs and even less are generating renewable energy for themselves, energyshare aims to change that.

energyshare – a quick summary

The energyshare tariff allows anyone to switch to 100% British renewable electricity in their home – at the same prices as BG standard energy.

There are 3 things that British Gas does to make energyshare a green electricity tariff:
1) match all the electricity the customer uses at home with 100% British renewable electricity
2) give customers a free energy efficiency product to help them to use less and to save on their energy bills
3) make a donation on their behalf to the energyshare fund, energyshare tariff members get to vote on how this money is spent

Ofgem have certified energyshare as a genuine green electricity tariff under the green energy scheme.

All of this is made possible by having a 12 month contract on the energyshare tariff with a cancellation fee

Let us create a better world for the next generation.

    I find these claims extraordinary.

It implies to the technically naive that they will somehow have their own supply of renewable electricity to their house and not electricity taken from the National Grid.

We get our electricity from the National Grid. They get their energy from many sources - power stations that use gas, coal, oil etc, nuclear powerstations(including those in France) and renewable from solar, wind and hydro.

Personally I don't want nasty French nuclear generated electricity in my house - can I pay a premium and have it removed from my supply?

I'm just passing on info - I don't know much about it myself tbh!
