Getting from Newcastle to Gloucestershire?

Hi all,

Hope someone can help me out!

My OH is in the forces and has been posted to Gloucestershire for 3 years. I live in Newcastle and need to find a cheap way of getting to him every now and again.

He often comes home so it wouldn't be a regular thing but would just like to know if anyone knows a cheap way of getting there?

I'm thinking under £80 return. I've thought about flying to Bristol then getting the train which would be great but normally costs about £120 return.

Anyone got any more cost effective ways?

Thanks in advance :-)

Look at CrossCountry trains to Birmingham, you might be able to get some cheap advance purchase fares.

Otherwise look at NatEx / MegaBus coaches heading in that direction.

Looks like £30 - £40 each way should be possible using Advance Singles on the train.
In theory, £17.50 each way is possible.

Need to plan ahead to get those sort of prices though.

Have a play on East Coast Trains website.

If you book exactly 12 weeks in advance and are flexible with your timings then it's usually quite possible to get the cheap rate.

Looking on Mega and picking a random date 9/6

    Departs 05:30 Newcastle, Neville Street
Arrives 11:20 Birmingham, The Priory Queensway Stop PC

    5hrs 50mins

    or
    mega_sm.gif 1 seat = £17.00
View Departs 11:20 Newcastle, Neville Street
Arrives 17:30 Birmingham, The Priory Queensway Stop PC

    mega_sm.gif 1 seat = £19.00
    View

Then National Express coach leaves Birmingham 12;45 arrive Gloucs 14:05.
    Cost £10.30

    Gives a rough idea.

It doesn't, but it'll get you into the general area.

Megabus will take you to Birmingham as it shows , you then need to change and get a Nat Express coach to Glouc.

Not too sure if they are both at the same terminal, you'll need to check.

Oh I understand! Sorry I had a 'silly' moment, I understand now. Still good news though as it's still cheap travel :T

    Really?
I've never found that twelve weeks stuff to be accurate.
Twelve weeks seems to be a target.
Advance Singles are often released later, sometimes a lot later, particularly for weekend travel.

Anyway, just looked at 16/17 Aug, exactly 12 weeks, and the cheapest Advance Single in either direction on the OP's route is £45.50.

Fly to Bristol on easyjet (£50ish return) then take a coach from Bristol to Gloucester (£8-10 return). Way nicer than an 8hr coach journey.
