Replacement hot water cylinder

Hi,

The coil in the cyclinder has either split or got a hole in it.

Just been quoted £1600 + Vat to have it replaced.

Any thoughts?

(I have some) ;)

Didn't think the price of Copper had gone up that much
If it is a straightforward swap of an indirect cylinder then I think more like £500. What exactly is the "cylinder", size, type etc. please?

It's a Hercal coil indirect cylinder.

About 5 foot tall but thin.

Storage capacity is around 93 litres (I believe).

Assumiing that the cylinder will cost around £200, another £250 to £350 to fit it would be about right. It all depends whether its 22mm or 28mm pipework going to it. I replaced one with 28mm pipe going towards it and was shocked at the cost of the fittings.

Get some other quotes, £1600 is taking the micky!

    There's a 1600 x 300 96 litre one on here:

But if I were Range I'd be having a word with whoever did the labelling :D
I also agree with Hugo, once you go away from 22mm (because of the material element and smaller sales volume?) the price of fittings goes through the roof. See if you can find the cost of 28mm swept bend connectors

  • Thanks for the replies. :)

I believe the piping is 22mm.

I thought the £1600 was taking the mickey too. In fact I thought the whole situation was a case of taking advantage of an OAP.

The heater is actually my mums, who called a company who had a no call out fee. She was led to believe they knew the problem and would have it sorted in half an hour. Cost of £95 for 30 minutes work.

She was happy with this so called me to tell me the good news. I got round there in time to see her quoted £1600 for the job and being charged £111 for this estimate.

Thanks for the link Bob, The worst thing about their labelling in my mums case is it is against the wall. It is therefore near enough impossible to read the model number. I did hit on the bright idea of using a mirror to read it but that failed when my mum used it to read out what she believed was the model number.

Vegansaver - where abouts in the country is your mum?

This can have a knock on effect on pricing - I still think £1600 is way over the top. I would almost go as far as advising you to dissuade her from ever using them again.

  • She's in Kent.

I've advised her not to use them again. Going to see if I can find a plumber that someone else has recommended.

But for the time being she's applying for a warmfront grant.
