I'm confused by this, because it would be my instinct to give a cat a bit of both, but I have had a few rescue cats and the rescue places always have them on dried only and always recommend this. Not sure she likes wet food, but I thought perhaps I should try to give her once in a while

There is essentially nothing wrong with feeding a cat dry food only. It is manufactured specially to give them everything they need. Given the choice though, cats will east a variety of things. (including grass, which is good for them). Cats, like humans, can get bored if they're only fed one thing. They like a variation. Be careful on the sugar thing though. Cat's can't taste sugar so they will eat it and it is very bad for their teeth and gums.

Feeding dry only is simply bad, sorry. Leads to a lot of health problems in cats.

That is only one school of thought. Many people feed their cats only dry food without any detrimental effects. I like to think of us owners (sorry - staff) who feed a variety being "enlightened".

Nothing wrong with spoiling your bundles of fluff - and I think it's healthier.

My cat has just turned 2yrs old. When she was a kitten, she was a huge Whiskas/Tesco pouch fan with biscuits, literally loved them both equally. This was until one day when she wouldn't touch the wet food anymore, I tried a variety of different makes! Therefore now, she just eats 'Go Cat' complete dried food, aswell as the occasional treats including chicken from left over roast dinner. Otherwise, she's perfectly happy on just the dried food.
  • i know cat behaviour specialists prefer cats to be fed on a good quality dry food only with a plentyfull water supply.
my cats are fed on a mix of dry and wet- i find they like the aldi wet food most out of ones i have tried
felix is dodgy- cats may eat it but it looks like sponge, i got it on offer once and they refused to eat anything but the jelly on it:o
my younger kitten wont eat dry though- he removes it from bowl like its poison:eek::rotfl:

No feline nutritionist would recommend an exclusively dry diet. Commerically produced pet foods are manufactured for maximum profit as a base line.

I an ideal world we would all feed our cats as close to a natural diet as possible; raw. However it's not practical for a lot of us and it's harder to introduce older cats to it.

I would never take nutrition advice from my vet unless they have done species specific nutrition training. Same as your GP referring your to a dietician and not doing it themselves, they're generally trained.

I highly recommend Animonda Carny and Bozita, both available form Zooplus. Work out the cost per meal and you will see it's very economical and due to the higher protein content, will keep puss fuller for longer.

Feline Fayre (available from B&M and Asda) is pretty good too. Just bear in mind the pale blue packaging is complimentary and the black complete.

Dry foods, the vast majority of them, are full of fillers, usually heavily carbohydrate laden. Cats are obligate carnivores and have no need for it. It's empty calories and can be addictive.

I'm on a very tight budget and feed a dry meal and a wet meal a day. When someone deigns to employ me I will change to a predominantly wet diet with high quality dry as a top up and raw as a regular treat. I do not free feed as I live with a pig who will wolf it all down as soon as it hits the dish and has put on a lot of weight in the past because he doesn't know when to stop!

I've said it before and I'll say it again, we all know of someone who lived till 90+ smoking 40 cigarettes a day or never touching fruit or veg, doesn't mean it's a healthy recommended lifestyle!

There's a lot of truth in that. You only get to find out through experience and every moggy is different :p

Every moggy may be different in what they LIKE but all cats are the same as what they NEED and SHOULD have....
