Proof of bank a/c details needed

Just received a letter from my Building Society asking for proof of my bank account details as they don't seem to have any! It's all legit, etc, but I don't get it really - they've been transferring money no problem up til now, at my request, and they've just 'noticed' this? Strange, they want me to send it to them as well (bank statement and a form they want filled in). They won't transfer any more money unless they get these details. I might phone them and ask what's going on.... I might ask if they will accept me going into one of their branches with it all, I don't fancy anything getting lost in the post to them.

Going just by what you have posted here. It does seem strange. I would approach it with caution. Its not unreasonable to be told whats going on before parting with such information.

    1. Which building society? Which bank? Is it an internet or branch based account? How long have the transfers been going on for?

    2. You say its legit. Are you sure that the letter really came from your building society? Have you checked the address and phone numbers given on this letter actually do belong to the society?

    3. Who at the society whats these details and what post do they hold in the society? Why has the problem arisen now?

Two ways to approach it would be

a.To go into one of the society branches and ask to see one of their security team.

    b. Phone the head office and ask to speak to someone in the security department.

In either case make a note of their name and what is said.

If a savings group has had your ID from a very long time ago when the "system" for verifying ID was different they may well want to re-ID verify you to the current regulations.
I've had this with a financial group where I had done transactions before over many years - suddenly required me to send ID even though I had not changed address/bank/name whatever when I wanted to do another withdrawal.

As you have a branch within reach....
I'd take down ID (usual stuff - address and name - passport or d.licence plus some utility bills or credit card statment to verify address) to your local branch along with the letter from the organisation and get them to verify it there and then on the spot - preferably giving you a note on their headed notepaper to confirm you have done it.

having a local branch available at least means you can show them the originals rather than having to get photocopies certified and then sent off to head office if the branch is not within easy reach

Thanks for replying both of you and for your helpful replies. I've checked the contact details from their website and they match, same headed notepaper that I've had before. The letter was not signed though (done in a hurry??), I will check on the person's name again though and their position. The phone no. is the correct one for my type of account and everything.

There is a branch close to me where I think I will go to tomorrow as I am going that way anyway and see if they will accept what I have got, I really don't feel comfortable sending out in the post, even recorded delivery or whatever it's called now!! It just seems really strange though. I hope it's just a case of them changing their system as you say chiefgrasscutter, but again I was thinking - surely there would be a 'standard letter' sent out to everyone saying that this has now changed/new requirements, hmmmmmm!!!

    Thanks again.
