Immersion question

The kwh input to heat the a tank of x litres by y degrees is the same whether using the gas boiler or the immersion heater, but gas is around a third of the cost per kwh. Even given the lower efficiency of a gas boiler, how do you get a figure of 70% cheaper?
Because of the efficiency of the energy delivery. A considerable amount of energy is lost getting from the boiler's burners to the hot water tank. Whereas the immersion heater's energy transference is direct to the water. And you don't have to switch your CH on to heat the boiler, unless you have an ancient system without the most basic controls?
I am aware of this, I was pointing out the efficiency (or lack thereof) of the three options available to heat water and heat the house. The greater danger, for most of us, lies not in setting our aim too high and falling short; but in setting our aim too low and achieving our mark0 -

And presumably a 4th DAN miser would cut the showers altogether and save on the water bills...
From Kong Fu Panda, we are familiar with the tiger style, the crane style, etc., but the fourth DAN miser has mastered the cat style, and is able to give himself a tongue bath. Obviously such a Neo (Matrix) like messiah is merely a myth.0 -
How many immersion heaters were fitted before 2004, against the last seven years?
Yes there are still many of the older type immersion heaters still in use, I have one myself but it never gets used because using the gas boiler all year round to the heat water is definitely cheaper!
Your original statement is incorrect:Most immersion heaters don't have thermostats, but they all have thermal cut-outs.
Immersion heaters have always had adjustable thermostats but the new types that comply with BS EN 60335-2-73 have an additional safety cut-out, which prevents the water boiling if the thermostat fails. It costs me less money to heat a tank of hot water by the immersion heater, than by the gas boiler. But less to run the central heating and heat the water, rather than heating and immersion combined. I have worked it out as about seventy per cent cheaper. It is roughly the same in the properties I let out and all my family's systems as well.
Absolute rubbish! It is also better for the gas heating systems components e.g. motorised valves, pump etc. to be used daily rather than to lie idle during the summer months of the year.
As a landlord I hope that you have ensured that all immersion heaters fitted in your rental properties comply to the latest BS standard, but I think that we all know the answer to that one don't we!

The thermostats I was referring to was the ones that can be adjusted without having to remove covers etc. Which I assumed the OP was also alluding to. From what I recall, thermal cut-outs have been fitted to immersion heaters for good many years.Absolute rubbish! It is also better for the gas heating systems components e.g. motorised valves, pump etc. to be used daily rather than to lie idle during the summer months of the year.
When was the last time you inspected my heating and hot water systems? All the components you mentioned above have been working perfectly well for many years, without any need for repair or exchange. As a landlord I hope that you have ensured that all immersion heaters fitted in your rental properties comply to the latest BS standard, but I think that we all know the answer to that one don't we!
Not that it is any of your business, all the electrical and gas equipment meet the standards that were in force at the time of fitting, as well as any changes to legislation since fitting, that have required any retrospective attention. In addition to that, all the gas appliances meet current standards and are issued with a Landlords Gas Safety certificate. The greater danger, for most of us, lies not in setting our aim too high and falling short; but in setting our aim too low and achieving our mark0
