Living flame gas fire advice

Looking at replacing our old gas fire as it doesn't work now. We would like a living flame gas fire however I have heard that a lot of heat is wasted, so would like one that minimises this, can anyone recommend one, I been looking at Screwfix direct and B&Q same company.

I live in an old terraced house about 110 years old but we have been using a gas fire in the same fireplace (living flame but encased in a metal casing with coals) but it doesn't work now.

    Hi
I used to have a living flame fire, made by Brilliant fires, it was superb. Type to chose depends on flue type and rebate thickness, I know they had a number of different styles. They were really good for me as I could only have a slimline fire due to the flue being on an adjoining wall, Brilliants fire design curved the front of the "coal" holder meaning that the number of coals could be increased and it didnt look as 2D and sloped as other models.
Was also very pleased with its use and the way it could be adjusted.
Miss it loads now as there is no gas in my new living room and no flue, Boo Hoo!

Where to find them ? Mine was from an independent supplier, if you go to their website (https://www.brilliantfires.co.uk) you can search for your local one. Apparently the website is under construction but there is an e mail address and phone number for contact.
    Hope that helps
  • I too have a living flame gas fire but one of the original type that is a basic tray with sand and the gas goes through the sand and then through the coals. As my house is a very old terraced cottage it does actually look like a real fire and many a time have had to stop people throwing fag packets into the flames :D

I think now you can get them where instead of the heat going up the chimney it is convected out into the room but I have to say I wanted it to look like a coal fire and didn't want the flames enclosed or false looking coals.

I would try looking in yellow pages for a local company, I know there are several near me with showrooms where you can see the fires lit, then you could perhaps look online for something similar?

Cheers for the advice guys. Had a look in B&Q aint got much in stock now due to changing seasons. Went to http://www.internetfiresdirect.co.uk they give some good information there on how efficient the fires are, so one can compare, however you have to buy extra bits like Fret and trim which both together adds £60 on top.

I live in an old terraced house with brick built chimney as shouldn't be a problem having a living flame fire in I guess. Brother in law is a plumber and did our last fire but he is difficult to get hold off, either working or at pub :(

My main concerns are that its got to warm up the whole bottom floor as its two rooms in one and reasonable cheap to run, I rather pay that bit more up to £300 ish for a reasonable fire, would like it to be period if possible and nice to have a remote control and turn heat down quickly when I can.

I check that link thanks for the input :)
