baxi brazilia wall heater won't stay on?

I have a Baxi Brazilia F 8 S wall gas heater.
When I try to ignite it the flame (it might be called a pilot - not sure thou) comes on about 50% of the times, and then you are supposed to keep the control knob held in for 20 seconds and then you can turn up the gas (if you want) and the heater starts giving heat. However, we can never move to the next stage and get the whole heater to come on. Generally holding the control knob in after igniting, the flame tends to go out before the 20 seconds are up.
What's wrong with and how can I fix it?
What is purpose of the thermocouple? is it a safety device?
Any info/help appreciated.
Thanks

see link for info on what a thermocouple is. the fault would be consistent with a faulty thermocouple. This is not usually an expensive part, but you need a coprgi engineer to fit one.

ok.
thanks to everyone for replying.
It sounds the parts going to be about £5, and but roughly how much would a corgi engineer charge for doing the job.

I have similar problem with a baxi central heating boiler. Had the problem last year but it righted itself - don't know why - but its started again - boiler fires up but instantly does away. Last year when I spoke to anyone who might fix it, it seemed like hundreds - talk of pumps, etc. What do you think?0
