I want to change desktop to a lap top.
Can I play the laptop through the house tv? Its a 50". and what would it have to say on the box allowing me to do this. Is it just an hdmi lead and what happens to picture on the laptop? if it does play through the tv.
Hope that makes sense!

    'the' laptop
well that would depend on what faetures the laptop has
as for output,if you have an HDMI equipped TV/laptop then you ca clone the desktop accross or stretch the display accross the two displays
I use my PC for media playback and its hooked up to the 50" via HDMI

what are you planning to use the 50" display for?

Because the 50" is in the lounge and thats were I want to use the laptop. I do not play games only hearts!!!. The idea is to save space and get rid of desktop and screen. Then wireless printer, away we go [just like that]

I use a laptop in the way you describe.

Just make sure that the laptop has HDMI output, plug an HDMI lead into the socket and into the corresponding input on the TV and away you go. The HDMI lead carries the sound as well - stereo where applicable. On my laptop, the sound from the laptop is cut off, but the picture still stays on (the laptop) screen.

Depending on the exact resolution of the laptop output, you may have to find the correct TV aspect ratio for the desktop to fill the TV screen - I've set three of these up now for various people and always found an exact match.

Incidentally, to further enhance the set up, you might like to buy a wireless keyboard and mouse (got a logitech one from Amazon for £19.99 last week). You can then site the laptop anywhere you like and just sit on the settee with the keyboard and mouse on a tray and watch the input on your TV screen.

Another tip - get an HDMI lead that is a bit longer than you expect to need. It means that if you site the laptop at some distance from the TV you can drape the lead into positions so that other members of the family don't trip over it.

Love the idea of wireless keyboard means the laptop can be hidden all the time too just key board and mouse on the coffee table.

if you are planning to use the laptop via the TV all the time then you dont need a laptop
you can get small factor PCs

    as an example

I wouldn't bother with Pentium's, they don't make them any more.

In terms of AMD vs Intel, Intel has started to beat AMD over performance and price in some cases, over the past few years. If it's a good buy, it's a good buy, I wouldn't let the fact that it's AMD put you off.

That has a blu-ray drive as well.

thats an old argument and not really applicable now
Intel has the higher powered chips but you need to weigh up cost/performance/suitability
