surround sound

Options
Hi all you lovely techies :D

Yesterday I bought an Asda branded 5.1 surround sound system and am trying to set it up now :o, it comes with three leads with a red and white end on each, on the back of the big box there is aux and dvd, i tried plugging the red and white wire into aux, and then plugged it into the back of my lg plasma where it said audio but there is no sound, I'm not sure if I can plug it into the dvd as my hubby is in bed and its hard to get to. I also looked on the back of the ps3 to see if it would plug in there but again nothing! HELP!!!!

The "audio" sockets on your television will be the audio in that accompanies the Component Video input.

I do believe the only audio output you have will be optical digital, and you can't connect that to your "all in one" because they don't make provision for that (one reason of many to avoid the "all in one" systems).

You should have a headphone out socket so you can use that to feed the audio to your "all in one", but all you will get is 2 channel stereo obviously.

I answered that for you in my initial reply, the audio sockets you are using are the inputs that run alongside Component Video.

As these are audio inputs they are of no use to you, you need a socket that says "Audio Out" in order to be able to connect it to your all in one.

Note that when (or if) you do finally achieve what you want, all you will get is 2 channel stereo. The only true 5.1 (Surround) sound you get will be from the integral DVD player.

That's some serious mis-branding if it says 5.1 on it but there's no way to feed it 5.1 discrete channels. You need to look for an audio OUTPUT on your TV, and it's unlikely to have one apart from headphones. There's a way to get the audio out of the PS3 into this box, but it's cack. You need to take that Asda thing back and get something with the proper inputs. The PS3 has an optical out for sound that you can use. Your DVD player may have the same. That's 2 optical ins that you need for your surround sound.
Your DVD player SHOULD have stereo phono (that's the red and white) outputs at the back, but you'll have to look! This will get you Pro-Logic surround which was impressive in the 1980s.

Did either the 5.1 system or the TV come with instructions?

If so, what advice do they contain about connections?
