Travel insurance - "backpacking"

Hi,

I am going travelling with my partner for approx. a year in September and finding travel insurance is giving me a headache so im looking for some help if possible!

We are starting off in SE Asia for 3 months, just travelling round tourist style, then heading over to Australia in December on a working visa for the rest of the time.

Does the insurance we need to get have to be "backpackers" insurance to cover us for the whole year? Or can we get annual multi trip cover? We really have no idea where to start and all the backpackers insurance seems to be really expensive...though I do realise cover for a year wont be cheap.

Is it an option at all to do each bit separately? i.e single 3 month trip for asia then the rest?...we truely are clueless!

If it is the backpacker option we need, does anyone have any suggestions as to which to go for? (I have done the money supermarket check but any other options would be appreciated!)

Thanks in advance,

Alex

also forgot to add that we dont have a return flight, we have the year long working visa but we are not sure we will stay the full duration or we may decide to go on somewhere else when we are done in Australia etc.

You need backpackers insurance. Annual multi-trip only covers up to a certain amount of days per trip, eg 31 or 45 days.

You would also need to arrange the insurance for the whole trip before you leave the UK as most insurers only cover if the trip originated from the UK. There are a couple of companies that will cover otherwise, but they are a lot more expensive than arranging it before you go.
