I may be wrong however I do not think they have actually written off anything which they are not obliged too. I am sure that Scottish Power are bound by the ERA code of practice which means they can only go back one year. The £1000 they have "written off" is out with that 1 year period.

This case is covered by the Code of Practice on Accurate Bills.

Basically, following an error of this nature they can only backbill you for amounts for one year.

You should ask for a detailed bill covering this period.

Check it carefully and match up the consumption charged with your submitted readings.

Overall you will have done well from their error, by a significant amount. :)

The thrust of the OP's argument is that if a company makes a mistake in the customers favour, then it can't be corrected and the outstanding amount should be written off. That is patently incorrect.

Banks have been known to wrongly credit a customers with huge sums - e.g. £million - the OP's logic is that money belongs to the customer.

Would you have noticed if you were being overcharged by the same amount?

In all honesty no, I probably wouldnt have!

What is your opinion on having the phone put down on you whilst in the middle of a conversation? Or calling someone up about their letter of complaint having not even taking the time to read it in the first place?
  • My opinion on that is that it is bad customer service, and I wouldn't be too happy about it. But I would accept the £1000 being written off, and leave it there. That's a fair write-off to be honest, and I don't personally believe the situation warrants having your entire bill written off (as nice as that would be o'course!).

If the agent considered the call was abusive, then they are advised to hang up.

Calls are recorded, so if they cut off the call in the middle of a normal conversation, you should submit a complaint. Give time, date and name of agent if known.
