Laptop problem any ideas?

I switched on my laptop this morning, it started to boot then stopped, I tried again, it booted but froze with coloured horizontal lines across the screen. Now it won't boot at all, it's charged up, (tried it plugged in too and without the battery just to be sure) the power light is on and otherwise it's dead. Any ideas before I take it in for repair?

I had a similar problem with my old laptop (IBM Thinkpad) - sometimes it would boot up, then it would freeze, other times I'd get horizontal lines, error messages etc. At first I thought it was overheating and perhaps the fan was blocked with dust. I tried to reinstall all the software but that didn't help. However, on the odd occassion that I managed to get it to boot up it would crash with the slightest movement (vibration on the table etc.) - so think there's something loose inside. I've given up now and bought a new one.

I think it might have a software clash, I have most of my data backed up, I am borrowing a HD Caddy tomorrow from a techie friend. Once I have backed up the rest of my HD I will recover it and see what the result is.

check the airway of the fan,. i donno how many laptops i fixed that where over heating due to the fan being clogged up,. yep i know u got display problems but it maybe due to the over heating,.
