Help diagnosing car problem

Hi,
My car has a problem that was intermittent and I just waited for it to stop doing it but now it has become permanent.

When I start the car it revs like this Vroom, vroom, vroom, like I am doing it with the excelerator pedal, but I'm not. Then when I drive the car the rev counter stays at 0 and there isn't much power to the car, I can get it to about 55 - 60 but takes ages. No more nipping out at junctions for me.

When I come to a standstill at junctions, traffic lights it starts the vroom, vroom thing again.

Everything else with the car is working fine.

Hoping someone can shed some light and my partner can fix it.

My old car completely lost power and that was the coil. It confused the computer diagnostics.

It was quite soon after I bought it, so I got the garage that sold it to me to sort it.

Could you take it to a garage for a quote and then decide the best way forward? You might have to pay them for that, but then maybe your boyfriend could fit the part. I would rather use a trusted small local garage myself.

It needs checked over by your friendly, local independent. It could be anything from an air leak to a faulty MAF and everything inbetween.

    OK thanks for the replies,
Perhaps you could ask on Money Saving Expert for some help in getting your crystal ball working :) but until then

    Diesel? Petrol?

Diesel could be an AGR valve.

.....and yes, the light has come on.
Any ideas on how much I should be looking at to ask my garage to plug in the diagnostic thingy?

with the rev counter not picking up a signal , Crankshaft Sensor fault is the most likely, the cheap e.bay ones do not work so forget that option,
