We'd been there for just over 3 years with an original contract of 6 months and were on a rolling month contract iirc!

When did the 6 months term expire/ or when did the original contract start?

You say you moved out on March 26th. When did you give notice (in writing)?

Thanks for you help so far!

The original contract began in Feb 2008 and expired 6 months later.

We handed in notice on the 23rd of March in writing and he actually agreed with my partner about only paying rent up til the 19th but then obviously went back on this.

Looking back it would seem he only pressured me for the keys because he had someone waiting to move in, i could kick myself for being an idiot but i'm naturally a very shy nervous person so he obviously realised by intimidating me he could get them!

Will try and get hold of him and see what he comes out with.

    Thanks for all the advice

I am not sure why G_M considers jjlandlords questions not relevant. OP - can you please give the exact date in Feb 2008, it may be very relevant to your liability.
Life should be a little nuts; otherwise it's just a bunch of Thursdays strung together.

For a statutory periodic AST you only need to give 1 month notice expiring at the end of a tenancy period.
Assuming rent was payable monthly, your tenancy ended no later than 23th May in any case.

I'm trying to found out whether OP's notice did in fact end the tenancy at an earlier date!

Sorry my kids are being a pain so had to sort them out before replying.

The original contract started on the 1st of feb 2008, with rent payable on the first of each month.

It depends on the wording of your notice, but having handed it on 23rd March your tenancy could have ended on 31st April.

Sorry i do apologies, i'm trying to do this with two kids running around, i've got the dates a bit muddled up so will put the correct ones here

    Original contract 1st feb 2008
    Notice handed in 21 April
    Moved out 23 April
Rent payed up until the 1st of June

I should really learn to proof read stuff before posting!

Nevermind... your liability was therefore up to 31st May based on these dates.
So we're back on the dates you handed key over or when new tenants moved in (easier to prove).
