I'm a bit confused and I wondered if someone with more experience in these things could help.

I've been an EDF dual fuel customer for 10 years and am just coming to the end of a fixed term deal (30/6/11) EDF want to move me to their Fixed 2014 tariff but by my calc the electricity will go up from what I'm paying at the moment from 10.62 per unit to 12.37 per unit. Having looked around I cant find cheaper dual fuel but the cheapest fixed price for electricity is npower at 9.36 per unit (the daily charges are roughly the same) so I reckon it’d be cheaper to move to npower for electricity and stay with EDF for gas however this would be at their variable rate

The main question is – should I bother moving at all or go with the EDF fixed 2014 price, the main bonus is that the dual fuel is fixed until April 2014, whereas the other option is that the npower electricity would only be fixed till july 2012 and the gas isn’t fixed at all, and id lose my dual fuel discount. Is it worth the extra effort to switch or should I stick with EDF on their fixed 2014 plan?

  • Well Centrica and SSE said that wholesale prices has increased 20-30% since last price increases ...personally I've gone for EDF on their fixed 2014 plan, but it is entirely a judgment call and in my case it's cos I want to keep payments roughly the same with what I currently get with Atlantic and by staying variable I think there's a chance they might go up a lot in the next 2.75 years..

Basically "do the math" (comparison sites) and be honest about your "attitude to risk"...
