Help - keep dropping connection to hub

Twice this morning my Acer netbook has dropped connection to my BT home hub, despite the hub still showing three green lights so obviously it isn't that the Broadband has dropped out.

I've followed the troubleshoot routines that come up but that doesn't sort it. When I look at "available connections" mine has disappeared, although all the neighbouring ones in the flats are showing.

Both times I've switched off and restarted, and that has sorted it, but then it drops again.

I'm on Windows 7 on Firefox, with Kaspersky security showing no problems detected.

Any advice as to what is causing this please? Never happened until today.

Happened a third time. Disappeared from list of available connections, then reappeared but when I clicked on "connect" it said it couldn't connect to this network. While I was exploring options again (cautiously as I don't know what I'm doing) it came back.

    Weird.

One step above restarting your homehub, have you tried resetting it?

There is a little reset 'hole' on the side of the hub that you can depress with a pin or tip of a ballpoint. This will reset the hub to it's factory settings so make sure that you have the sticker on the back of the hub before you do this. On this sticker you will have the default wireless key and the default admin password. Take a note of these.

The wireless key is what your laptop needs to know to connect to the hub.

The admin password allows you to access the hub settings.

When you have reset the pinhole give it about 60 seconds then open your browser and type this in the address bar bthomehub.home

You will then be asked to enter the existing admin password once, then enter a new password twice. This should be something memorable.

You will then be presented with another window where you can change the default wireless key, the one you will use to access the internet from your laptop.

Once you have completed that you are all reset and hopefully your problems should be resolved. Let me know how you get on. :)

Phew, that sounds complicated. While you were writing that I was connecting my ethernet cable, which seems to have fixed the problem (hopefully - won't know until it does or doesn't drop out again).

My brother-in-law set up the whole system for me and set it to automatically connect to the router on startup, so I was lost as to what passwords etc. are needed. He did give me a WPA code but that's all.

The trouble with "online help", and presumably your suggestion as to typing something in the address bar, is that if I can't get into the internet I don't have an address bar or access to online help to follow.

I'm afraid I'm too much of a novice to fiddle around, so think I'd better stick with the ethernet connection until b-i-l can call in to see what's going on.

Feel guilty now that you've gone to all that trouble. I was hoping it would be something really simple, but it never is is it? :(

it could be the hub itself to blame (at fault ). unsure about the home ones but i know that the bt business hubs cause weird dropouts //

You don't need to be connected to the internet to keep an existing window of information on the screen.

You also don't need to be connected to the internet to be able to type things into the address bar. The address I gave you bthomehub.home is a local command that takes you to the settings of the homehub, it does not use the internet to do this.

Nevertheless if you are unsure it is always best to er on the side of caution. :)

Yes my b-i-l said it isn't a very good one (it's the original white one). Perhaps I'd better get a new router. Anyway ethernet cable seems to be holding for now, thank goodness. It's just a bit of a nuisance - another cable to trip over.

I've just been and bought myself a Belkin router which says it is suitable for BT connection, so when my b-i-l is off work next week I'll ask him to fix it up for me.

Thanks everyone - even though I didn't take your advice it was so good to know you're there!
