I'm currently living next door to 2 empty houses, both empty since november time and there are 2 more empty houses in the next street.

I know that 3 are normally rented out and the other 1 is currently being done up by a developer, but if these houses were not neighbours they would just appear to be empty houses.

I don't really understand why the OP is interested? are you trying to buy in your area? or rent? do you work for the council and are trying to get the rates paid by the owners? why assume they are respossensions and why is it only 'these days' that the properties are empty?

The one I thought indicated a repo (from stuff on here) was things like "Do Not Use" tape over the toilet etc as the utilities are disconnected?
Evidence of a drain-down is normally a good pointer to a repo, or a builder's part-ex which isn't selling as quickly as expected. My place third back from now was a builder's part-ex and it was drained down for the winter. And can I say, Persimmon, I STILL hate you. Thanks. ;)

mine has no furniture on the photos (well apart from a wardrobe and a couple of breakfast bar stools

i had moved out and needed to get the council tax exemption and you can't be furnished for that...

nothing suspicious about it and definitely not a repo...

Would I automatically go crazy in the head? Start smearing the walls in my own excrement?

Interesting to read all of your thoughts on this. The flat above me has been empty for a couple of years and I can't really understand why - it's in a good area, not too tatty (can't vouch for the inside) and would probably sell for about £250,000.

I was curious so I downloaded the Land Registry details and it seems the property has several charges over it (including local council), so presumably the owner is in debt and just can't afford to sell it.
