HTC Wildfire problem - screen brightness when using maps

I have a Wildfire and would like to be able to use the maps while driving, but I am having a problem with the screen brightness and wondered if anyone could help me.
I want to be able to put the Wildfire in my handsfree holder and leave it there while I'm driving along and it's displaying my current position on the map. However, after a couple of minutes it dims the screen to such a low brightness that I can't see the map properly.
I've tried selecting the option for not turning the screen off if the phone is plugged in to charge. This does indeed stop the screen turning completely off, but it doesn't stop it dimming when it's using maps. Strangely, if it's plugged in and doing anything at all except maps, then it remains at full brightness, but it dims if I'm using maps. This is the opposite of what I want. I'd be happy for it to dim if I'm using anything else, but maps is the one app that I want full brightness to remain even when I don't touch the phone for ages.
The only way I can make it stay at full brightness while I'm using maps is to disable the screen timeout altogether, but then it leaves the screen at full brightness when the phone isn't plugged in and drains the battery.
Can anyone explain what's going on, and how I can sort it out?
Thanks.

Tyre performance in the wet deteriorates rapidly below about 3mm tread - change yours when they get dangerous, not just when they are nearly illegal (1.6mm).
Oh, and wear your seatbelt. My kids are only alive because they were wearing theirs when somebody else was driving in wet weather with worn tyres.
