Talk Talk don't want to Talk.

I called Talk Talk in November for information about their services in my area and during the call it became apparent Talk Talk wasn't for me, I've just seen on my credit report that they did 2 credit checks on the same day. I didn't give them permission to do a search nor was I advised that they wanted to do a search.

I've written to them to explain the situation and ask to have the searches removed, they've replied today to say "Kindly be advised that credit checks are done when a person calls in asking for information about our services. Our agents do advise callers".

What can I do? I didn't want or give permission for this... I've called them today, after getting the letter they passed me to 6 different people just to be told to write in again.

Write to them and ask them to remove the searches or add an explanatory note advising that you decided not to go ahead with their services. If they don't respond, write to the credit file agencies and see if they'll help (they can adjust your file although they might fob you off at first).

I have done this. They responded saying it's their policy to preform a credit check even if someone is just calling for information.

Can you live with it then? I doubt it will adversely affect your rating. If this is fairly standard (and if Talk Talk do it, I guess other companies do too), then lots of people's files will have these types of searches. If you're still bothered by it, talk to Experian (or whomever).

They're a strange firm, I contacted them some while ago, didn't receive the info I asked for, but the follow-up letter they sent some 6 weeks later was to a previous tenant who moved out 12 years ago. Obviously not the most efficient bunch.
