Cat food - should I persevere

Hi All
After reading the numerous cat food threads I thought I should try a better quality of dried food for my cat.
She has been on Royal Canin since I adopted her but I bought ACANA at the weekend (similar to Orijen but 65% meat, no cereal) and she is not having it!
I've mixed it with the RC but she is whinging and eating aroung it (I swear if she gets a kibble by mistake she spits it out!).
I know it's only been two days but should I stick with it?
I feel cruel and she is doing the "hard done by cat fading away to a shadow routine".
Anybody else with experience?

Do you feed a quality wet too?
If so I'd just let her have the Royal Canin. It's not a great food and very expensive for what it is, but it's very from from the worst food. So if you feed a quality wet too, I'd just let her have the RC.
If not, I'd say stick with it.
My cat's are super fussy. Tried arcana, orijin, fish4cats etc, they had one of it. It's just a matter of finding one your cat likes. Arcana has a few different meats in so maybe she just doesn't like it.
What flavour royal canin does she like? Maybe try a different, good quality food that's the same flavour as the royal canin.Sigless0 -
I only give her wet food once or twice a week at most and it's more as a treat.
The flavour was as near to the chicken as I could get - not many Prairies in Wiltshire!:o
I did try her with Applaws ages ago (chicken flavour) and she definitely spat that one out!
Do they add something to RC or the like so cats prefer them?0 -
Whilst I'd agree with what Rev said, I think two days is probably too soon to give up completely. I know my cat would take longer than that to adapt to a new food and he's a fairly easy going beastie."There may be a legal obligation to obey, but there will be no moral obligation to obey. When it comes to history, it will be the people who broke the law for freedom that will be remembered and honoured." --Rt. Hon. Tony Benn0

With my 6 now.....
They all eat Animonda wet - no probs here but with dry... sigh
Fred - will not touch ANY dry food, ever
George, Teddy, Chloe - will eat ANY dry food and prefer dry to wet although have both
Fiona, Phoebe - will pick the bits of Go Cat from dry and leave all Orijen, Taste of the Wild out (I know which is which as they are all different shape granules but I have mixed all in one container as was trying to get them used to Orijen and /or Taste of the Wild)
I had that mix for well over 2 months now and still the "better" food is always left in the dishes and the Go Cat scopped up by them lot.
So... good luck0 -
Better to have a predominantly wet diet and dry as the treat............
2 days is too soon and there are cats that will point blank refuse a new food if presented to them out of the blue. I had to wean a cat off Tesco cheapest dry food and it took me weeks! Took even longer to get her to eat any of the wet I presented her with. I had to do it very slowly, literally a couple of kibbles at a time, slowly increasing the ratio.
There will be cats that will never give in and eat what they're given but I think most cats can be persauded.0 -
Why not feed wet predominantly and let her have the dry for a treat?
Toplife, feline fayre, hilife (these can be had for 19p per pouch in home bargains), these are available in supermarkets. Zooplus have so many excellent food too. Check out the thread at petforums.co.uk.
My cats are super fussy, thankfully they'll eat any dry that is chicken flavoured, oddly, they were't fond of arcana. But love applaws. Mind have dry down all the time and have a few pouches a day so they don't eat much dry.Sigless0 -
I hand fed mine dry to get them used to the changeover - they thought it was a treat!0

Probly best to stop buying the go-cat & premix it with the other dried in a container or bag & store it so it all smells the same.0 -
i have 7 cats and i no if they dont like it they wont eat it no matter how long i try,as for feeding dry food more than wet i wouldnt, two of my cats have had problems after i put them on dry food only ,my poor tedpeg ended up having a operation to remove a large crystal stone from his bladder ,this was after 3 times of beighn put on a catheter to remove crystal blockages, hes been fine since hes been back on a wet diet ,dry is just for a treat now, i couldnt bear to put him or any of my other cats through that again not to mention the £1,400 vet bill !!! best of luck0

boys need to have wet more than the girls due to this actually - but if you only have girls then you can save lots of cash & they will have nice teeth!0
