Hi I am 15 and male so I'll try and help, though I'm a bit different to your son.
ipod nanos are great and very popular, I think they are better than shuffles as they have a screen etc, and aren't too pricey these days, but only really useful if he likes to listen to music. If he has some music but not a lot I suggest getting a smaller size, e.g. 2GB, My friend recently bought one of this size of ebay for £50 buy it now, so look out for deals. if you want the users ebay account PM and i'll pass it on to you.. I think it was cheaper as it had a tiny bit of paint scratch but perfect condition? They also come in pretty cool colours too. Also iPod have a limited edition (RED) nano where a certain percentage of the money goes towards aids in africa, though he might not like the colour.
iPod videos are great as well, but they come in quite large sizes 30gb and 60gb (the 60gb is about the same size as my hard drive - a bit unnessicary if you ask me!) so if he likes to watch a lot of tv or dvds this could be pretty cool, but they are a bit more expensive.

I don't know so much about phones but ones with bluetooth are pretty popular, also sliders, ones that hold music etc...

I've just asked my 16 year old son who is commited to being 'cool' for his advice (his older brother and sister who couldn't care less about being 'cool' affectionately call him a 'fashion victim'). He first said, "It depends how much she wants to spend!" When pushed to do more than a teenage grunt :D he said "an ipod nano definitely" (although personally I agree with a previous poster who said Creative Zen were better, ds insists they just aren't cool)!!
The online John Lewis have a blue (cool colour according to ds) ipod nano 4 gb for £116 at the moment. It is free delivery and there is also a code for £15 off if it still works (look on vouchers and codes thread or pm me if you want details). According to ds this is a good piece of kit and a great price! If you can't afford this then let us know your budget and we might be able to have a rethink.
Good luck, he sounds a lovely boy with a very kind Mum :j
