Best Credit or Debit Card to use on Cruise?

Options
I am going on a cruise next month with Royal Carribbean. They use a 'cashless' system on board in US Dollars, whereby you have to register either a Credit Card or Debit Card when you first check-in. At the end of your holiday, they deduct your bill from this card.

I would like to know what you would recommend to use, that would have the least 'sting' at the end? They do not like prepaid debit cards apparently, but would prefer a recognised Debit or Credit Card. Taking into account currency exchange charges etc., does anyone recommend a certain card?

Exactly the same cards as are recommended for a visit to the US - there's post after post on the subject here and a comprehensive article under the travel motoring tab at the top of this page.
  • U can pay ur bill with Dollars.

i registered my debit card with them on the day we boarded but every few days went to reception and settled my bill in cash dollars, to keep track of my spending x

  • CCs: Halifax Clarity, Aqua card (both have certain limitations but get you the most bang for your buck)
    DCs: Metrobank, N&P

CCs: SAGA Platinum, Post Office Mastercard, Halifax Clarity, Metro Bank.

The AQUA card will likely have too low a limit at £500.

    Debit cards as above.

We always use a Nationwide credit card onboard ship, their exchange rate is usually very good. However, you must make sure you tick the box for the CC company to make the conversion rather than the cruise line, the default is the cruise line, if you do not tick otherwise you will lose out.

Their exchange rate will be the Visa or Mastercard rate, the same as all othe Visa cards or Mastercards. Their charges will be more than those quoted above.
  • I used a Cashplus pre paid dollar card last year on Royal Caribbean

Register the CC and pay the bill in cash the night before and just the last few bits go on the card.

As has been said any card good for the US will do.
