Car Insurance Help

Hi

I am hoping that somebody can help me, the OH had a car, which was due to go back to the finance company at the beginning of may, has he did not want to renew the finance agreement, he decided that he would purchase a used car himslef cash.

So me being me, did all the search's in order to get him the cheapest insurance, which i did, and purchased for him, using his debit card details and set up the direct debit. This was in March.

The Hp car has now gone back, and now he is left with his 2nd hand purchase, but me not realising that on his hp car, his insurance had the no claims bonus on, which is now cancelled and we no longer have the car,

So when i did the searches, i did it with the ncd, and now have since found out that, yes i know typical person trying to be helpful, but getting it wrong in the process, the 2nd hand car is asking for proof of this, which I provided, from the hp car, but that showed expirey as being may..

What is the best way to approach this, has it is my fault that i have made this mistake, has they are now asking for the complete diso!!!! back, which my OH is not happy with, has he would be, but because it was me, I feel that I should try to resolve the issue somehow, without getting him into trouble of any sorts..

Any help with this or advise would be appreciated..

thank you from a distressed Gizmo

So are you saying that between March & May you had two active policies for two different cars but you claimed the NCD on both?

If this is the case then I am afraid you cannot use it twice so you have made a mistake.
You could look at cancelling the full price policy without the discount and starting again, but be aware that you will have no discount beteen March-May and you will also have a cancellation fee.
Make sure you check the price BEFORE actually cancelling.

Yes, I had, well I organised it for the OH to have two active policies for march through to may, not realising that you could only have the ncd on the one policy.

I am abit worried if I informed them of my error, on behalf of my OH, I will get him into trouble and make the situation worse, becuase he is not very happy with me, and keeps telling me that he could go to prison, for something that was my fault, and I am really getting stressed out about it, has I thought I was being helpful, ( which clearly I was not)

And now I don't know what to do..?

They won't put you in prison for making a mistake.
However you won't be able to get the NCD discount on the second policy. I think you are going to have to accept that you will pay full price for this at least for the Period of March until the present time.

You now need to checkout whether it's cheaper to keep this policy at full price for the remaining 8-9 months OR whether it's cheaper to cancel it (paying the fees) and get another 12 month policy that will be discounted with the NCD.
We can't tell you that because it depends on how the cancellation fee compare with the discount.
Find out the figures first before making a decision.

You won't go to prison but you will have to pay for the discount which you've had and weren't entitled to.

A couple of things to watch out for.
You may well find their new "adjusted" price may not compare with a new policy.
It's worth getting a quote as a new customer with no ncd before speaking to them.
Then you can bargain with them to pay the year at a fair price, rather than one to a captive customer.
Either way you will have to pay.
If it is cheaper to cancel now and take out a new policy using the ncd, you should get a pro rata refund, plus a fee of up to £50.
