First direct PPI

Hi there,
I've been paying PPI on my First Direct credit card for 11 years.
I did know it was optional - but I didn't know it didn't work if you have a pre-existing condition (I do - and I talked to them about this when I took the insurance out).
I also didn't know that it didn't work if you are self-employed (I have been for a number of years, but I wasn't when I took the policy out).
I probably would have carried on paying if it wasn't for all the recent news. It's still not properly cancelled, because they have to send me a letter and a form to sign - they said they couldn't just do it over the phone.
Do you think I have grounds for a claim?
Thank you.
