PC DVD Writer - Problem writing to disk

Have recently installed a DVD writer on my PC and have been cutting up AVI files using Virtualdub ready for dumping on DVD's.
My problem is that I select the file (or snipet) using Virtualdub and select my DVD Drive as the destination and start processing. When it is complete I get the Windows bubble message saying I have files to write to the DVD but when I click on it it opens up a Windows Explorer window without any files in. What's going on?
Btw my DVD drive sometimes appears as a "CD-Drive" in My Computer, although sometimes it appears as "DVD-RAM".
Any ideas? (have ensured I have the latest drivers etc and I can play CD's/DVD's from it).
Thanks cloud_dog

You could try going to my computer , right click on the dvd drive and select properties.
On the `recording` tab tick the box `enable CD recording on this drive` then OK.
Hope this helps.

I would use something like Nero other than the windows burning tools, which are pretty poor.Ever stop to think and forget to start again?0

The burning facilities built into Windows XP do not offer the capability to burn to DVD - only to cd. You need to have third-party software installed to be able to burn to any kind of DVD (dvd-r, dvd+r or dvdram). I use Nero, and I have used it for years with no problems. Nero Essentials OEM version 7 is available for under £3 from ebuyer, but if you want some more advanced functionality Nero 7 Premium Reloaded is your best bet.0

1) Back-up original AVI files in AVI format (unaltered)
2) Create some DVD's with extracts for playing on normal DVD's.
Looking at Nero (which I have) it appears to want to create a DVD for play-back on a DVD - so this sounds fine for point 2. Although, am currently creating all these files using VirtualDub and DivX (and/or VD divx codec).
For point 1 am I correct in thinking I just select 'Data Disc' in Nero? (I apologise in advance if this such an naieve question).
